Life as a Freshie

The clanking of wheels, the tearing of Velcro straps, and the nervous chatter are all typical sounds that any Fresh Meat participant hears when getting ready for practice. Although the moral is high, and each girl possesses positive energy, the tension and desire to excel is inevitable. Whether we admit it or not, all of us Freshies know we are competing for a spot on a team, and therefore need to demonstrate our best skating skills.

Practicing twice a week never seems like enough. We all try to find some time in our busy schedules to get out and skate – whether that be practicing blocking, jumping, whipping – or just to have fun. As the weeks pass, we all notice improvements in our stance and realize that our competitors have actually become our friends. We gossip about our lives, give out skating tips, and brainstorm suitable derby names – which is probably the most difficult process to go through for any derby girl.

As we wait anxiously for the results of our skill testing, all we can think about is getting back into our skates. The biggest desire for any Raw Meatpie is to become a well seasoned Meatie. After the nerve-racking hours pass, and we are notified that we are still in the running to be a Roller Girl, there is a huge sense of relief.

So, we grab our skates, our pads, helmets and mouth guards, and hit the ground rolling …
